Bowling average calculator
Work out a bowling average from pins and games or a list of scores, the way league sheets do, and see what an average bowling score is in real leagues.
League average
173
173.80 with the fraction dropped. Next 3 games: 528 raises it to 174; 494 or less drops it to 172.
How to calculate a bowling average
- 01Add up the pins of every game bowled in the league.
- 02Divide by the number of games.
- 03Drop the fraction: 173.8 is a 173 average.
What's an average bowling score?
In six leagues' standing sheets (264 bowlers with 9 or more games, at three bowling centers, October 2026), the middle bowler averaged 172 and half of them averaged between 148 and 195. About one in five averaged 200 or more; about one in four averaged under 150.
Those are league bowlers, who bowl every week; an occasional bowler's scores are usually lower. In a handicap league, a lower average is no disadvantage: the bowling handicap makes up most of the difference.
| Share of league bowlers | Average at or below |
|---|---|
| 10% | 123 |
| 25% | 148 |
| 50% (the middle bowler) | 172 |
| 75% | 195 |
| 90% | 211 |
Fractions are dropped
League averages are whole pins with the fraction dropped, not rounded: 18,163 pins in 96 games is 189.2, a 189 average. Only games actually bowled count. Absentee scores, vacancies and the credit for an unfinished game never count toward an average.
To raise and to drop
League sheets print two numbers beside each average: the series that raises it by one pin next week, and the series that drops it by one. Both get closer to the average as the season goes on, because each night counts for less.
| Average | Games | Pins | To raise(3 games) | To drop(at or below) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 | 9 | 1,353 | 459 | 446 |
| 175 | 30 | 5,260 | 548 | 514 |
| 189 | 96 | 18,176 | 634 | 534 |
| 205 | 60 | 12,320 | 658 | 594 |
Entering and established averages
A league uses an entering average (a bowler's book average, usually last season's) until the bowler has bowled enough games to establish one in the league; USBC recommends last season's average for the first night. A bowler without any average establishes one in their first session (Rule 108c).

Questions
What is a good bowling average?
In real leagues the middle bowler averages about 172, so 170–180 is solid league bowling, 195 is the top quarter, and 210 or more is the top tenth (six leagues' sheets, 264 bowlers).
Do absentee scores count in my average?
No. An absentee score (your average minus 10) counts for your team that night, but not toward your average.
How many games make an average?
That's the league's rule. The league sets how many games establish an average; many use the first session (3 games).
Why is my average 189 when the division says 189.9?
League averages drop the fraction instead of rounding. 189.9 is a 189 average.
