Bowling league software: the options compared

Bowling league software and programs compared: a Windows program, a center's league management software, a spreadsheet or the browser. Costs and devices.

Run your league in the browser

Scores on any phone or computer, USBC rules, a standings page for your bowlers. One league of up to 4 teams is free.

Choosing in three questions

  1. 01What does the secretary use at home? A Windows PC, a Mac, an iPad or just a phone narrows it quickly.
  2. 02Does the center already pay for a league system? Then the scores may come from the lanes for free.
  3. 03Who pays, and how often? A program bought every season, a center licence or a yearly plan.

The Windows program

Of the bowling league programs, CDE Software's Bowling League Secretary (BLS) is what most USBC league secretaries use, and it is thorough: standings, averages, handicaps, a financial module, brackets in the Professional edition, custom reports and uploads to LeagueSecretary.com, where bowlers look up their league.

It runs on Windows only; CDE says it doesn't work on a Mac, an iPad, a Chromebook or an Android tablet. Each season is a new version: $155 (Standard) or $225 (Professional) new, with upgrades from last season's version starting at $42.

The center's app

Some centers license league management software and run it for every league in the house. LaneTalk's League Manager pulls scores straight from the lanes and costs the center $500 a year; it needs Qubica's Conqueror X scoring (version 14 or later). LeaguePals is sold to centers too and is built around bowlers paying their dues online through it.

If your center offers one, ask what it costs the league and whether you can take your league's history with you if the center changes systems.

A spreadsheet

Free, and fine for a short summer league. The cost is the secretary's evening: every average, handicap, absentee score and point is a formula someone has to get right, and a sorted column can scramble a season. The handicap calculator and average calculator help check one.

Where Bowling League Online fits

It is for the secretary who doesn't have a Windows PC, or doesn't want to buy a new version every season. It runs in the browser, follows USBC's defaults with every rule as a setting, and gives bowlers a standings page on their phones. We checked it against real standing sheets: averages, handicaps, team totals and points, to the pin.

Moving over is quick: give it your league's last BLS standing sheet (the PDF) and the teams, bowlers and averages come across. Pro adds brackets and sidepots that fill in as you type the scores, a dues ledger and co-secretaries.

What it doesn't do yet: a full financial module (it has a dues ledger), score imports from the lanes, and uploads to LeagueSecretary.com. The printed sheet does upload to USBC's League Standing Sheets.

Questions

Can I move a league from another program mid-season?

Yes, from the next week. From BLS, start the league from its latest standing sheet (the PDF): the teams, bowlers and current averages come across as entering averages. Most secretaries switch at the start of a season, from the last sheet of the old one.

Is there free bowling league software?

A spreadsheet is free. Bowling League Online is free for one league of up to 4 teams; bigger leagues need Pro ($39 a year, 30 days free).
